Priory Church School in the beautiful Brecon Beacons has been a wonderful project from start to finish. Headteacher, Lyndsey McCrohon, and the fantastic staff and students at the school have been brilliant to work with as we have discussed and designed their school grounds makeover.
Mission one was to create a ‘Community Garden’ with the aim of encouraging community cohesion. This garden was intended to be a cosy and interesting space where parents and children can sit together and build relationships. The existing shed was opened out and included in the design as an all-weather shelter with plenty of seating. Bamboo screening in handmade planters add to the cosy feel and the water wall and weights table provide hours of investigative play and teamwork fun for the children.
Mission two was to develop the ‘Peace Garden’. This included an outdoor classroom … but this was going to be no ordinary outdoor space.
The design incorporated existing planters and seating and we enhanced the naturally peaceful setting with sympathetically laid paths and willow archways. The flow of the garden starts from a hobbit hole entrance way and leads to the magnificent raise teepee outdoor classroom. This fabulous structure is clad in locally sourced Douglas fir. The handcrafted staircase leads to an enclosed classroom. Porthole windows allow plenty of light in and give a bird’s eye view of the gardens below.
